Steemitはブロックチェーンを基盤とした報酬付きのソーシャルネットワークである。ブロックチェーンはビットコインで知られているコンピュータ上の分散型台帳技術である。Steemitはソーシャルメディアの特徴を持ったブログプラットフォームであるとも言える。登録済みのユーザー（Steemianという）は閲覧者が投票やコメントを付けられる記事を投稿することができる。投票により、STEEM、STEEM Power（SP）、Steemドル（SBD）の形の報酬が発生する。
Bitsharesの創設者であるDan Larimerと元金融アナリストのNed Scottによって創設され、2016年3月24日にα版がスタートしSteemブロックチェーンの最初のブロックが生成された。5月3日、Steemitは7月4日に最初の支払いを行い完全に機能することを公表した。[1]CoinDeskの記事（メディア報道ページとそのReferencesを参照）や、Jackson Palmer（ドージコイン創設者）などの著名人、The Corbett Report、The Dollar Vigilanteの記事によってクリティカルマスを得て、人気が高まった。
2017年1月10日のSteemitの登録済みユーザー数は125,000以上で、24時間以内のアクティブユーザー数は4,400であった。[2]
6月16日、@daniel.chiruがSteemianになったことで、登録済みユーザー数は200,000に達した。[3]
