One option to earn Steem would be by mining. When active, it rewards when you set up your computer to join the peer-to-peer network and validating transactions. 1% of Steem Power rewards would go to the miners. In the Steem official site still there is a step by step instrucion page: How to mine Steem (retrieved in January 17th, 2017).[1] Mining steem was possible since before the first payouts made in July 4th, 2016 and, according to the Hard Fork 0.17 Change Proposal announced in January, 10th, 2017, will be ceased with the removal of Proof of Work (PoW). Below, some tips from other steemians published before the steem mining's close.[2]

Linux

Using Linux is the most common method of mining, better documented and easier to setup. Probably the best starting point is the post Mining Steem for Dummies. Actually a bunch of the steps on that guide are no longer needed and the post Steem Miner Setup in Ubuntu 15.10 / 16.04 is a good one for ubuntu users.

Windows

You can run a Virtual Machine with Ubuntu installed or directly in Windows with @bitcube's Steem Windows Wallet and Miner.

Mac OSX

You can also run a Virtual Machine with Ubuntu installed or as [@geoffrey] said in his post Steem mining a comprehensive guide using the Homebrew probably will work.
