Plagiarism

Plagiarism is the wrongful appropriation and stealing and publication of another author's language, thoughts, ideas, or expressions and the representation of them as one's own original work. Plagiarism is not in itself a crime, but can constitute copyright infringement. In academia and industry, it is a serious ethical offense. Even on a platform such as Steemit, plagiarism means the same. Presenting another person's idea as your own in a broad sense constitutes as Plagiarism.

Steemit's policies on plagiarism

If you are posting plagiarized or copied content, you can get in legal trouble for violating copyright laws. Plagiarized posts and spam are seen as abuse and will be downvoted by community members. If you are posting or using someone else’s content, you must ensure that you have the rights to use the content, and properly reference the sources where you got the material from.

Image Plagiarism

If you are using an image that is not your own, make sure you are allowed to use the image, and cite the source of the image.

Using random pictures from the internet without giving credit is discouraged. You may, however, use photos from “free image” websites such as Pexels.com or Pixabay.com. All photos on Pexels and Pixabay are free for personal and commercial use. You may also use images from Google which are 'labelled for reuse' after checking their copyrights and confirming that you are free to copy and redistribute on any medium or format and can also transform or build upon the images for any purpose. If the author of images demand attribution, you must make sure that you give appropriate credit, provide links and indicate if changes were made.

What Steemcleaners tag as Plagiarism

  • Word for word copying and pasting from any source.
  • Spun content taken from any source. Spun content means content that is almost copy and paste, however with small changes to the wording to avoid plagiarism detection tools.
  • Claiming works of art that are not your original work.
  • Claiming an idea is your own. Did you really invent the telephone?
  • Failing to use Markdown or HTML for your quotes.
